Pennsylvania Business Energy Bill Audit Guide

A Pennsylvania business should match its electric distribution utility and rate schedule before comparing supplier prices. The PUC's PAPowerSwitch business resource states that suppliers determine small-business versus large-business offer eligibility. A posted residential price or another account's quote is not automatically available to this business.

Find the applicable Price to Compare

Locate the utility and rate schedule on the recent bill. If the business is on default supply, use the baseline applying to that actual class and effective period. If a competitive supplier already serves it, obtain the current agreement and price schedule as the starting point.

PAPowerSwitch's FAQ explains that the Price to Compare concerns generation supply and includes Pennsylvania Gross Receipts Tax in that supply cost. That means a comparison must check embedded tax treatment as well as the headline rate. Adding an amount already included can distort the result.

Separate small-business shopping from a large-account proposal

The official business page distinguishes supplier-defined eligibility. Confirm whether a listed offer accepts the account's usage, service class and start date. For a larger business needing a negotiated proposal, obtain the complete schedule and included components rather than transferring a small-business listing into the calculator as an available quote.

Ask about deposits, introductory pricing, recurring fees, cancellation provisions and any renewable attributes. Variable prices can change under the agreement; a current figure cannot establish twelve fixed future months. The bill checker is useful for a constant scenario with those assumptions disclosed.

Keep utility charges and documents separate

Distribution, demand and tariff-specific lines remain an account review question. A supplier-rate reduction should not be applied as a percentage to the entire invoice. Identify which components are already within the supply price, including transmission or other charges where relevant, so current and offered scenarios match.

Gather twelve monthly kWh quantities for the same account. If the business recently added equipment or changed occupancy, note that separately. A correction, estimated meter read or changed billing-period length should be understood before using the statement as a representative baseline.

Hypothetical comparison with a separate fee

Suppose a business has 192,000 annual kWh. Two equivalent supply prices differ by 0.35¢ per kWh, creating a $672 usage-based annual difference. A new separate $14 monthly fee absorbs $168, leaving a $504 modeled annual difference before a transition amount.

The figures are hypothetical, not a PECO, PPL, Duquesne Light or supplier offer. The calculation assumes equivalent treatment of embedded components and taxes. If one proposal excludes an item the other includes, the result cannot be treated as a like-for-like comparison until that item is reconciled.

Treat gas as its own agreement

Identify the natural gas distribution company, commodity supplier, usage unit and applicable commercial program separately. Electricity shopping eligibility does not decide gas eligibility. For a supply quotation stated in a volume unit, confirm the heat-content conversion before using dollars per therm.

For a useful initial review, name the distribution utility and the specific bill or offer question. Keep the current contract and rate schedule available for appropriate later sharing. Do not send account numbers or private invoices through an ordinary first contact message.

Use the result as a starting point

Once the current and offered components match, use the business bill checker to show the arithmetic. It holds entered prices constant, does not fetch live offers, and does not independently calculate utility demand, delivery or tariff charges.
